A marquee gives couples the ability to create any theme or atmosphere, specify any type of furniture and seating arrangement, use lighting for extra effect and add additional tented areas for a blessing ceremony, drink reception, catering, bar or chill-out area.

Whether its a traditional type wedding reception or an informal festival type affair, a marquee will create a magical and unique venue.

Marquee sizes and capacity – just what size marquee do you need?

Marquees come in all sizes…at Maidmans Marquees our frame marquees come in 3m, 6m, 9m and 12m widths and the lengths are in sections of 3m.

Small 3m x 6m garden marqueeBy deciding how many guests you want at your event, you can then use our marquee occupancy guidelines to see how big a marquee you might need. Obviously, these are only estimates but generally give a good indication of sizing. However, bear in mind that the addition of a photo booth, bar, stage, casino table etc may mean you need more space.

 

Our frame marquees don’t have guy ropes, so other than a small gap around the outside of the marquee, we dont need to allow any extra space. If room is tight, measure up the available area and then find a marquee that fits – use our occupancy guidelines to then see the maximum number of guests that can be accommodated.

We always conduct a site visit before we accept a marquee booking so we will double check measurements and discuss what exactly you want to include in your marquee. We can then advise on the final size.

Paper lanterns to light up your marquee

Here at Maidman’s Marquees, we have a stock of large, medium and small white paper lanterns and we always think they look best randomly spread around, although we have occasionally been asked to Maidmans marquee lighting paper lanternsmake them look more symetrical. If you don’t like them all white, you can source your own designs or we can order coloured lanterns to match your scheme – from big, bold colours to pastels and patterns.

We do often get asked if we hire out our paper lanterns for people to install in a hall or other venue. Unfortunately it isn’t that easy and this isn’t something that we do. Our paper lanterns are specifically designed to work in marquees and  to be most effective, the lanterns need to be hung at the same time as the marquee roof linings.

The opulence that a marquee can create is in keeping with a formal event and guests suited, booted and dressed in their finery!

Our marquees were recently installed for a wonderful evening at Chafyn Grove School in Salisbury, Wiltshire and catered for over 260 guests. As well as the lined marquees, we installed a dance floor (this crowd loved their dancing) covered by a twinkling starlit ceiling, a stage for the band, a screened off catering area, thermostatically controlled heating and a large area for the all-important bar.

Are you planning a marquee event?

Whether its a wedding, small garden party or large festival, we’ve outlined a few things for you to consider when starting to plan.

Space available
Our clearspan marquees come in 3m widths and 3m lengths; eg we start at 3m x 3m and go up to 12m  x 30m or larger. Think about your available space and access to that space – we will always come and measure up before we take a booking so can double check your measurements!

Surface available
Is your event marquee going to be sited on grass or hard standing? Are we able to drive stakes into the grass and/or can we make small bolt holes in the hard standing areas. If not, we can still accommodate you but may need to supply some heavy weights to keep the marquee safe and stable. The surface the marquee will be standing on will also affect the type of flooring we recommend, as an uneven or wet surface may need a solid all-weather floor under the carpet.

Guest list
How many people do you need to accommodate in the marquee and are they to be seated, standing or a bit of both? We can supply round tables in various sizes, 6 foot trestle tables, poseur type tables and many different types of chairs, sofas and other furniture. Also consider if you want a dance floor, bar area, catering tent or chill-out area. Once we know how many guests you are planning for your event and answers to the above questions, we can advise on the best size and format for the marquee(s). As well as the marquee we can supply generators, luxury toilets and PA equipment – a one-stop shop approach will mean that you won’t have to liaise with multiple suppliers.

Styling of the marquee
Have you got a particular theme or effect you wish to create in the event marquee? Is there a colour scheme we can work with? Whether you are wanting a relaxed festival type feel to your party or a more formal sit down dinner and dance, we can advise on lighting effects, layout and other features to help bring your ideas to life. We can also provide a scale plan of the marquee, so you can see exactly what can go where.

Time of year
If you are planning a winter event, there may be some essential extras you may want to consider. Thermostatically controlled heating is a must in the chillier months and you may need wooden entrance doors to keep the heat in. A solid floor will be ideal to help keep guests toasty and you may need outdoor lighting on a dark evening.

Marquees are not just for the Summer but on a lovely hot day you may want to open up the sides of your marquee, you may need further smaller gazebos to create shade and you may need extra refrigeration.  We will discuss all the options available to you.
